Local History Research

As the title of our organisation suggests we not only enjoy excellent lectures, we also do our own research and undertake projects.

  • Currently Rosemary is leading a project to refurbish the Shepway Cross. Funding has been received from Shepway and an application is being prepared for further funding from the War Graves Commission.
  • David Jones arranged for the plaque of those ex-pupils of the village school who died in the two world wars to be refurbished and installed in the school.
  • A small group consisting of Georgina Donaldson, Sonia Munday, Anne Chapman and Fiona Jarvest have typed up the handwritten census for the parish from 1841 to 1911. They are now in the process of extracting and analysing the key information from these censuses.
  • Janet Powell has collated information on all the service men who died in both world wars and are named on the War Memorial outside the church.
  • Fiona Jarvest is leading a project to produce a directory of all the historical information we have about the parish using the excellent work that was done by Carole Edwards for the millennium exhibition.
